My younger sister is learning Japanese language. She says she will learn several other foreign languages as well. I wonder if she can make a good career after learning these languages. Please tell if learning a foreign language is only for fun or some career can be charted out of it. - Syed, 23

We live in a global world and India expanding its overseas trade, skills in foreign languages can be turned into a full-fledged career. There are various careers options that your sister can look for i.e. she can work as a translator, interpreter, language teacher or a linguistic.

There are some jobs where a combination of languages and other qualifications and skills are needed like IT, marketing and sales, finance, law, etc she can even opt for these careers if she wants.

The remuneration that she can expect depends on the work she does and the skills she possesses. But still she can expect a salary package of 2-3 lakhs. If she plans to enter the corporate sector she can expect an even better salary package.

Incorrect answer will get negative marking

A strategic plan is essential to crack the toughest engineering entrance test IIT-JEE,
considering that only one student out of 45 gets through it. With the success rate being
so low, here is how you can be that one student ?

It’s that time of the year when aspiring engineers will put an end to the long laborious years of working hard to solve full of complicated Mathematics books, understand the strange theory of light scattering and learn the periodic table of periodically placed chemical elements. Yes, the two major engineering entrance tests- AIEEE (All India Engineering Entrance Examination) and IIT-JEE (Indian Institute of Technology- Joint Entrance Test)-for admissions to 30 NITs (plus several deemed universities) and 8 IITs respectively are here, and the anxiety is already seeping in the minds of young students.
Gear up for IIT-JEE and AIEEE entrance tests
Every year about lakhs of students appear for I I T - J E E a n d AIEEE. “ E v e r y student who wants to be an engineer dreams of pursing the degree from IIT. But it is very important to understand that preparation for The Indian Institute of Technology Joint Entrance Examination (IIT-JEE) requires rigorous hard-work as competition for the limited seats at the prestigious IITs is increasing year on year. Nowadays, students start preparing as early as in Class IX itself. They take special coaching to sit for the entrance exams,” said Ramesh Batlish, Head FIIT-JEE, an IIT and AIEEE coaching centre.

While IIT-JEE, which is rated as one of the toughest engineering tests to crack in the world has a success rate of around 1 in 45 students, AIEEE is the largest entrance examination in the world for admissions in engineering and architecture courses. So what does it take to be that one winner among 45 students?

“Students need to focus and maintain a positive a t t i t u d e . F r e t t i n g over the exam will not be h e l p f u l ; m o r e ov e r will waste your time. It is very important to develop speed. Do not overstress yourself, it is important to sleep five to six hours every night, especially three-four days before the exam to keep you physically and mentally fit,” advised Ramesh. “Short naps also help to regain freshness. Students should avoid over-sleeping during the day. It is important to focus on weak areas and improve upon your concepts. Your mantra should be quality of time and not the quantity,” he added.

If a student aspires to score a top rank in esteemed university then March is the right time to brush up your fundamental skills and re-energise all your efforts

Fundas to crack the two most difficult tests:

  • If you aspire to rake in a top rank in esteemed university then this is the right time to brush up your  fundamental skills and re-energise all your efforts.
  • percent hit rate i.e. all attempted questions are correct. This will enable competitive edge over others who will be left behind in the race due to negative marking on incorrect attempts.
  • Make summary points to remember all concepts topic wise and flag the questions with twist, intermingling of concepts requiring analytical skills. This will help in quick revision couple of days before or even on the eve of examination.
  • During practice sessions, one should develop speed in working out the questions.
  • To reap benefits, student through-out preparation period should remain focused with a positive attitude to study with utmost concentration. It is quality of time spent and not the quantity alone that will matter.
  • A short-break of 5 to 10 minutes after every one and half hours of serious study is advisable.
  • Students should indulge themselves in yoga. They need to develop inner calm, poise, confidence, power of concentration and spiritual quotient required for success in competitive examination like IIT-JEE, AIEEE. This will ultimately be of immense help on the D-day of the examination.
  • It is advisable to reach examination centre at least 20 minutes early. Few deep breaths on the seat in the hall will ward-off nervousness.
  • Speed and accuracy will help to finish the exam ahead of time, leaving some time for revision.
  • Do not leave all hopes on the luck factor, hard work and dedication is the key to success.
