Pvt engg colleges threaten to go on strike

Representatives from nearly 3,000 engineering, MCA and MBA colleges across the State will participate in the general body meeting

Private engineering colleges in the State have threatened to go on strike from 10th Feb. if the govt. fails to release funds as part of fee reimbursement. The Private Colleges’ Association will be holding a crucial general body meeting today to take a final decision on this issue. “We are unable to run the colleges. We are already incurring losses as students taking admissions are reducing every year and several colleges are on the verge of closure from the next academic year,” said a functionary of the association.

‘March is approaching and not even a penny has been released for 2011 till date. On the other hand, the banks are also denying us loans on the pretext that the colleges might be closed down permanently. This is somewhat ‘do or die’ situation for us’, he added. Amidst all these, the government passed the buck on the managements of the private engineering colleges saying that they have failed to provide the list of eligible students for distribution of reimbursement.

The Minister for BC Welfare P Satyanarayana, at a recent meeting, blamed the colleges for the inordinate delay in filing the lists. The association is stoutly denying the charge. ‘For second, third and fourth year students, nothing but a simple renewal is sufficient as they were paid reimbursement once.

Even for first year students, taking seven months time is atrocious. “We don’t understand why the government is dodging the issue and precipitating the matter,” the functionary said. Representatives from nearly 3,000 engineering, MCA and MBA colleges across the State will participate in the general body meeting. The core committee, which met on Saturday, finalised the strategy and is determined to go ahead with the strike, which if takes place, will hamper the academic year and lakhs of students may find it difficult to appear for other competitive exams this year.
